Visitors to the Middle Street Gallery this month will meet with a retrospective of masterly watercolors entitled “Travels With a Paintbox” by artist and teacher Douglas H. Teller. Visually they will travel to parts of Central and South America, England, and Spain via the medium of water and color.
Mr. Teller’s paintings show many years of experience and exploration with his brushes, colors, and techniques. He has a quick eye for details, as seen in his on sight street study, but an economy of means that avoid burdening the whole. His shadows create objects for the play of light. Some paintings are grand with the bravura of the confident use of technique (“Near Cardiff” Wales, 1989 and “Majorcan Tree” Spain, 1991) while others are quiet with a painter’s deft and sure touch (“Study for Bishop’s Lydeard” England, 1994). Most interesting was the flowing back and forth within each painting of realism and non-objectivity — or painting for the sake and love of painting.
