For years, conservative Democrats and Republicans have tried to pass a state law requiring abortion doctors to notify one parent of a teenager before the abortion can be performed. They have been defeated every time.
Almost everybody agrees that at least one parent ought to know that a teenaged daughter is about to have an abortion. (Many of us think parents should have to consent to the abor-> tion, but that’s another issue). Opponents say that an abusive parent might do some kind of harm to the teenager, so the conservative legislators provided that a judge could waive parental notification in this case. Opponents still say parental notification is a road block to a teenager’s abortion rights (although they don’t mind if doctors have to get permission from parents for almost any other medical procedure). But it doesn’t block anything; instead, it tries to get families together on a very serious matter.
Del. Jay Katzen supports parental notification legislation; and has voted accordingly. His opponent has not taken a position on the issue. We should know where she stands.
