“Smoke” will be shown at the Theatre in Washington at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20. Years ago the director Wayne Wang asked the novelist Paul Auster to work up one of his stories as a screenplay . The result — a highly cerebral intertwining of the lives of white and black characters in Brooklyn in 1990 — is obviously a labor of love. At the center of everything is Harvey Keitel, proprietor of a cigar store who has spent 14 years gabbing with customers, selling them cigars and holding forth from his comer of the world. Ruhning time is 112 minutes.
Halloween Dance Planned
A Halloween dance will be held from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28 at the Flint Hill Volunteer Fire Department. Music will be by Southern Persuasion. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. For reservations or tickets call Connie Huff-Harris at 675-3389.

The 34th annual Amissville Ruritan BBQ and Family Fun Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct$>21 at “Stuart Field” on U.S. 211 in Amissville.
Activities include BBQ dinner or sandwiches; leam to country line dance, lessons and demonstrations by “Keeping Kounty” and “Early Steppers”; crafts, yard and flea market sales; rides, petting comer; raffle booth and free balloons and candy for kids.
