An excellent way to learn about Virginia wines is to attend tasting events like the Blue Ridge Heritage Wine Festival where 15 of the states’ finest wineries will be offering their wines for sampling.
An event like this requires a strategy if one is to make the most of the experience. The first thing I advise is to organize a system for taking wine notes and then saving them for future reference. I use 3 by 5 note cards that I have printed on my computer, and then have a quick print shop copy these onto card stock and cut to the size desired. This system helps especially when I am tasting many different wines, as well as remembering a special wine that may have been a onetime-only experience.
At the top of the tasting notes I list, the producer, grape variety, location and vintage of the wine. I also list the date tasted and the place where the tasting took place. Ambiance is a factor in how we perceive such a
