Susan Rowan has been the postmaster in Sperryville since March of 1992. Due to a wide variety of tasks and responsibilities, the job is ever challenging and stimulating for the mother of two who lives in Culpeper with her husband, Dan.
Rowan says, “In my particular job, I do a tremendous variety of different tasks. I’m not doing the exact same thing all day long. There are millions of little things involved. Every time you thing you’ve finally figured it out, someone else in the office in the sky thinks there is something else that they need you to do.” A non-profit organization
The federal government oversees the postal service, but the service has been a business since 1971 and does not receive any tax money. The postal service earns all operating revenue through the rates that they assess.
Rowan explains, “We are mandated to break even over time. We are not in business to make a profit off of you. We’re here to perform this service of delivering your mail in the most efficient way we can.”
