Dr. James Gideon Brown, who died at his home in Woodville Wednesday morning, Feb. 15, at the age of 82, was one of the oldest and best loved physicians who began practice in Rappahannock County during the era of the horse-and-buggy doctor. He practiced in the county for 50 years. In one of the most outstanding social and hunting events of the season, the Rappahannock Hunt was host to the Old Dominion Hunt and other distinguished visitors yesterday at Double Gates for the beginning of the hunt and for breakfast at Mt. Prospect. A field of about 40 turned out at Fletcher’s Double Gates. At Mt. Prospect a delightful breakfast waited the fine company of the day. The dining table was centered with an elaborate three-tiered cake, presented for the occasion by Mrs. J. Armistead Lewis. Mrs. Lewis had exhibited her excellent taste in making the cake appropriate, atop the cake was a pinkcoated hunter, the top tier represented Rappahannock Hunt, the second tier the guests, and the base tier was decorated with cherries in honor of the day, Washington’s birthday. Mayor W. F. Moffett Jr. on behalf of Rappahannock Hunt, presented a gift, a bottle of perfume to Mrs. W.A. Miller as a token of appreciation for her hospitality, which helped make the occasion so delightful.

A spokesman for the State Corporation Commission has said that a decision on the controversial Vepco power line route through Rappahannock and Fauquier Counties would not be made for another six weeks. The contested matter is “still hanging,” he said, because Vepco has cut back on construction, and is not “pushing for anything speedy.”
