It was steeplechasing that led Simmons on his one trip out of the U.S. Theodora Randolph’s Bon Nouvel shipped to France to run in the 1968 Grand Steeplechase de Paris for trainer Mikey Smithwick. “We were supposed to be there for a month,” Simmons recalled. But that was the spring of the studentled riots that basically closed down Paris and rocked the world. “Racing went on,” Simmons said. Bon Nouvel finished third in Grand Steeplechase but shipped home after just two weeks.
