Simmons is filled with surprises. Garden burgers for lunch from a salt-of-the-earth deer hunter; Grateful Dead camp-follower from a Virginia country boy.

He’s not surprised at the writer’s surprise. “Gotta keep 'em guessing,” he laughed. “Those horses, they keep you young. Nobody can tell you you’re too old to ‘do’ horses. Nobody can tell you that.”

Simmons admits he was surprised at all the attention from the Woodville Award. “It’s a real honor to get this award,” he said. “I’ve gotta thank Janet [Elliott, steeplechase trainer whose Woodville Farm sponsors the prize] when I see her next.”

That should be soon, Simmons said, looking at the calendar in the tack room. “Steeplechase season is here. She’ll be around.”

Simmons finishes his lunch and looks at his watch. “Gotta get back to check on the bam soon,” he says, rocking back in his chair. “They count on me.

“I haven’t missed a day yet,” he adds. “I’, never sick. Not so far, anyway. I guess I’m too ornery.” Simmons heads back to work without a look back.
