The Fairfax Hunt Point-to-Point races will be held as usual this year, April 23 at Belmont Plantation near Leesburg. But there will be an overriding sense of sadness at the 2000 renewal.
Ian Neil Milne, for 19 years the huntsman for Fairfax, died following a long illness on Jan. 19. The 57-year-old foxhunting veteran regularly acted as head outrider at the hunt’s spring steeplechase, often presenting his wellmannered pack of Crossbred hounds to the crowd between races.
Milne was bom in Helmsley, Yorkshire in England. He moved to North America in the early 1970s to act as professional whipper-in to Canada’s Hamilton Hunt. He acted as huntsman for the Sedgefield Hunt in Greensboro, N.C. before moving to Fairfax.
While at Fairfax, Milne won many hound show championships for the local pack. He captured the coveted Marlborough Bowl 10 times for the club. He also bred Border Terriers.
