After Mikey Smithwick moved to Maryland to train steeplechasers from a base there, Simmons stayed on at Sunny Bank for new trainer, Dot and Mikey’s son Speedy. And when Speedy left to train in Kentucky, again, Simmons remained, this time with Dot Smithwick at the helm.
Simmons said the farm schedule has stayed about the same. “The horses are counting on you,” he said. “You can’t just break their routine.”
