To make it even harder for the ‘chasing novice, steeplechases take their own form according. to the course over which they are contested. The Feb. 26 Casanova races, for instance, though the first of the season for all starters, are held over the gently rolling Mt. Sterling course. The oval has wide, sweeping turns and a level run-in to the finish wire. What were expected to be “easy” races for horses, and riders, just getting tuned up for the long spring ahead often turn out to be some of the most competitive races of the year.
By comparison, the Foxfield Races near Charlottesville April 29 are run in far different style. The steep uphill run, a steep quarter mile about a furlong from the finish, makes jockey timing and horse stamina critical.
