“I love it with all my heart,” professed amateur rider Woods Winants. Despite the rigors of early morning gallops and a constant struggle to maintain riding weight, the 1999 Virginia Steeplechase Association champion jockey “can’t think of a better way to . tart the day. As springtime approaches, I always get the bug to be back on the horses.”
Quick to share credit, Winants volunteered that he is only part of a hard-working team. “I’m just a very small link in the operation. It starts off with the owners and the trainers. And the horse makes the rider. Riders are a dime a dozen.”
