He digs into a garden burger, the usual. “Fruit for breakfast,” he said. “I like these garden burgers for lunch, they’re better for you.” Surprising, coming from an avid deer hunter and cattle farmer. “You live longer if you take care of yourself,” he said. The guacamole and bean sprout garnishes followed the garden burger.

Farm life keeps him pretty busy, Simmons said. Lunch in town is about the extent of his regular outings. Unless, of course, he said, he’s following the Grateful Dead.

The Grateful Dead?

“My good friend Leigh Louria got me into the DeadHead scene a few years ago,” Simmons said. “Before Jerry [Garcia, lead singer for the group! died. I saw ‘em four times in D.C., and we went to see ‘em in Boston and at Hershey Park in Pennsylvania.

“I’ve even got my own tiedye collection,” he added. “My favorite’s the one with Tigger on it.”
