1 he object is to be the pair closest to the optimum time, which is set by the host hunt. Typically, a pair of volunteers will ride the course just before the pace so that the time is taken under the same footing conditions as competitors will face on race day. Some hunts, however, average all the times and use that figure for the optimum time.
In any case, the time is kept secret until after the last pair has competed the course. The pair closest to the optimum time is the winner. Points for year-end awards are awarded as follows: five for a win, three for second, two for third, and one for fourth.
