starters: Simmons handles all of them nearly every day. Feeding, hotwalking, grooming, turn-out, medical care — he does it all. Riding is the only thing he doesn’t do anymore. “I don’t miss it really,” he said. “You’ve gotta have somebody on the ground to keep things rolling. That’s very important.”
Simmons rises to gaze across the Sunny Bank barnyard, looking for the string of horses to return from training. All the reminiscing has been fun, he says, but now its time to get back to work.
Speaking the

Simmons takes the reins of Irish, a big chestnut, from rider Julie Gomena as she swings to the ground. It’s almost 10:30 a.m., and Gomena bubbles with excitement over the youngster’s morning gallop. But just as quickly, she’s out the door to her next riding assignment.
