jockeys to capture that championship. Kinross timber horses Company Eight, Jakob’s Pal and Stopped Silence provided the wins for Morris’ title. In 12 NSA starts, Morris won five and was twice second.

Virginia-bred and -owned Saluter jumped into legend status last season, setting a new NSA career timber victory record of 21 wins (so far). In five 1999 starts, the veteran captured his sixth consecutive Virginia Gold Cup, his second straight International Gold Cup, his fourth Virginia Hunt Cup and a record-tying fourth NSA timber championship.

Saluter’s ‘99 earnings pushed his lifetime American earnings to $405,839, a record for timber horses. Adding his win percentage from an English victory in 1997, plus the World Timber Championship bonus prize, Ann Stem’s 11-year-old gelding has earned well over $500,000.
