In the Middle East, it is called the “politics of archaeology". One faction will dig down into the past until the ground yields up some evidence of ancient ancestors who lived in that place, say. in 2700 R(\ And so they lay claim to that territory.

The other faction digs a bit deeper, finds a shard of “family" pottery from 2000 B.C. and claims territorial precedence. And so the digging continues. And so does the fighting. It is not a good system. But it should he instructive to us here in Rappahannock.

There is an expression I have heard here that makes me wince. It is our little secret, the crazy uncle in the attic of paradise. Dare I say it? Of course I do. The expression is “the come heres and the been heres."
