In the confusing story, Demetrius is in love with Hermia, who is in love with Lysander, while Helena is in love with Demetrius. The Duke demands that Hermia marry Demetrius, while she wants to marry Lysander. They all run off into the woods (Hermia and Lysander to escape and be married, Helena to pursue Demetrius) where they are bewitched by a potion concocted by Oberon (Fairy King) and delivered by Puck, also a fairy.
Supposedly the bewitched will fall in love with the first person they espy upon awak-. ening, but, unfortunately, the wrong people are there on awakening, and Demetrius, who used to be in love with Hermia is now in Love with Helena, who continues only to want Lysander, who still loves Hermia. too.
