These types of feeders usually provide a wire cage to hold the suet cake.
These feeders and a variety of ready-made suet cakes in seed, berry, peanut, and raisin flavors are available at many bird supply stores.
Bottom feed suet feeders are also available, these require birds to hang upside down. This type feeder will discourage starlings, jays, blackbirds and squirrels from taking over your suet feeder because they do not like to hang upside down.
Since most of the birds that are attracted to suet usually cling to the bark of trees in search of insects, suspend your suet feeder in a tree close to the trunk, approximately five to six feet from the ground.
The birds that visit your suet feeder will also reward you in the spring and summer months by eating the insects in your backyard. Another reason to offer suet is for the many adult birds that will undergo a complete molt of their feathers during the fall. This requires lots of energy that is found in suet.
Although you can buy readymade suet, homemade suet is Cheaper, takes only about 30 minutes to make and will attract more birds.
