oon neeas to ue loose, well drained and benefited with additions of compost, sand and peat moss or leaf mold. Some catalogs now offer “organic” fertilizer blends for bulbs. While these are fine, you can also mix your own with bone meal, fish meal, kelp and compost. A small amount ( 1-2 tablespoons) can go right into the hole during planting.
Or, if your garden beds are already well seasoned with organic matter as mine are, you could top dress with the same ingredients during the summer. Don’t forget to mulch after the ground freezes. Shredded wood or straw will decompose and add more humus to the soil.
Not only is friable soil better for bulbs, it’s a great deal easier on you, come planting time, especially if you intend to do the job by hand.
Some books I’ve read offer the advice of using a dibble for bulb planting.
