The Missionaries of Charity are living examples of contemporary disciples of Christ who “pray always and never lose heart.” The strength of their Christian activism is rooted in prayer. Weaker souls exchange activism for prayer. But activism without prayer is easily exhausted because it is devoid of meaning.

In contrast, Mother Teresa would insist that her sisters begin each day with the bedrock of solid prayer, including Mass and meditation, even before tending to the needs of the poor. She knew that without perseverance in prayer, her sisters could not persevere in the arduous task of caring for the poorest of the poor.
