Several bulb- planting tools are available to assist the gardener. Though for years I have stubbornly planted by hand, the sudden arrival this month of hundreds of bulbs ordered in a summertime giddy fit prompted me to make an acquaintance with modern bulb technology! A friend who on occasion helps me with large garden projects happened to be in possession of an auger —like implement. When attached to a drill (and extension cord), this wonder executes neat, precise planting holes in record time, saving gardener’s tendonitis, too.
Still, there are bulb planters, handled devices which purport to pull out a core of soil when stepped on or pressed into the soil. Oldfashioned planting bars, a long handled step-on-down and into the soil is supposed to work well for grassy or rocky grourid.
As I mentioned last time, to create a natural look with bulbs, space them irregularly. Large holes, of one or more feet in diameter may be dug to plant a large group of daffodils or tulips. Also, if I am starting a new bed or border, I wait until I have perennials planted
