The Child Care and Learning Center will hold its seventh annual fall auction and party on Saturday, Nov. 9 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Washington School on Mt. Salem Avenue.
There will be live and silent auctions, a tag sale and libations. Among the special items is a tournamentsized backgammon board, handcrafted in Rappahannock County by Craig Landrum.
The backgammon board is made of local cherry hardwood with holly and ebony inlay. Mr. Landrum crafted the piece from August to September, 2002.
He handcut the decorative swan motif marquetry using walnut, walnut burl, curly maple, sycamore, wenge, yellowood, lace wood, purpleheart, and ebony veneers. The board was finished with seven coats of clear gloss polyurethane rubbed to satin sheen and protected with two coats of quality paste wax.
The playing pieces and doubling cube are made from Crisloid. The dice are high precision, crafted especially for backgammon.
The cups, handcrafted in Bulgaria, are leather covered and equipped with the edge lips preferred by professional players and recommended for tournament play.
Mr. Landrum loves restoring and making things each year for the CCLC auction, since it benefits the children and is fun to do. Mr. Landrum said, "I try and pick a project that will test my woodworking skills and let me try something new. The extent of the marquetry on this project was larger than I’d done before and proved a challenge to finish so that it blended well with the rest of the board.
