Like all commonwealth’s attorneys across the state, Rappahannock’s Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke is facing a 7 percent reduction in funding for his office.
Mr. Luke, who has only one other person in his office, his secretary, said these cuts won’t impact him this fiscal year. It is next fiscal year, he is worried about.
“There is another round of cuts in December, I am told. That will affect the 2003-2004 fiscal year. If they follow through on the cuts they are talking about . . .and cut another 10 percent on top of what they already have cut, I don’t know how I’ll keep my office open five days a week. I’ll have to give my secretary leave without pay,” said Mr. Luke.
Over at the library, director Dave Shaffer was mulling over correspondence received from the state when he was asked how the governor’s cuts would affect the library.
The operating budget for the library, he said, is $119,800. Of that, the library was to receive $29,154 from the state. Now, because of the state cut of $4,373, the library will receive $24,781.
