Jones says he has had a “love affair” with the Blue Ridge since he first visited the area in 1947. “I feel like Brer Rabbit in the briarpatch,” he says of his circa 1750 log farmplace.
Now he and Alma are the proprietors of “Cooter’s Place”, a wildly popular “Hazzard County” venue in Sperryville, featuring “a Dukes museum, good food, and mighty fine bluegrass music.” He and Alma have opened a second “Cooter’s” store in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. In addition, “Cooter’s Garage Band,” with Jones as the lead singer, has become a fixture at regional fairs and festivals.
He and Alma have both been long involved in civic and charitable efforts. “We were taught that giving is a lot more important than getting,” he says. “For me, life didn’t really begin until I was 36 years old and dying from booze. I like to say that my life is not a story about falling down, but a story about gettine un.”
