the night — actually, things that scream like someone being murdered (cougars) or howl in loud cacophony outside your cabin door (coyotes). With the short seasons, I saw the increased intensity of behavior in the local creepy crawlies — from the box elder beetles that covered my walls in May and disappeared by July, to the flies that blackened my windows in August and were gone by October.
When I finally got tired of rambling through the West, I headed back to the Blue Ridge. Now living in Rappahannock County, within sight of Shenandoah National Park, I look at the natural world around me and find new things to wonder about: why Asian ladybugs that cover my walls sporadically are apparently unpalatable to our native predators, what will happen to our sense of place if our dogwoods disappear from the natural forces that are now attacking them, why some bears are perfectly content eating the apples from the trees next to my yard while others insist on smashing hummingbird feeders for the nectar inside, and on and on.
