helped everything in the old hollow to grow. Without the rushing river, the trees wouldn’t grow and blow in the wind, the grass wouldn’t grow green and give the animals food, and the birds wouldn’t be able to drink from the puddles.
So the old gray woman told the little girl not to fret, for she would send some fairies to the little girl’s house. She told the little girl to take these fairies with her to the houses of the old men who lived in the old hollow.
And that is just what the little girl did. Late that night the little girl, along with a tree fairy, a grass fairy, a flower fairy, a bird fairy, a cloud fairy, and a water fairy, all went to the house of the first old man who lived on the road back into the old hollow. They knocked on the door, and when the old man opened the door, the little girl with all the fairies said “Please don’t try to ‘trick’ Mother Nature by stopping the river. ‘Treat’ her well and you will have good things in life.” And the man was so frightened by all of the strange fairies, that he didn’t know what to say so he slammed the door as he yelled, “Go away!”
