Model conservation efforts by Rappahannock County residents Dick McNear and his wife Jeannie on their Greenwood Cattle Farm were applauded at a Conservation Awards Banquet held in Culpeper on the evening of Oct. 17. Sponsored by the Culpeper Soil and Water Conservation District, the event was held to honor residents who have shown leadership in the stewardship of local soil and water resources.
Jack Frye, DCR’s Director of the Division of Soil and Water, and CSWCD Chairman Gary Madson, presented the McNears with the State’s Bay Friendly Farm Award, given to one farm in each county of the Culpeper SWCD that is exemplary in its protection of the state’s soil and water quality.
Greenwood Cattle Farm consists of 450 acres of pasture and 300 acres of woodland. The McNears rim a 140 cow/calf operation, and raise threequarter breed hunter jumpers. All streams, ponds and springs on the property, as well as all woodlands, have been fenced off through the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program and the Environmental Quality Incentives Program to exclude livestock.
