A long long time ago, in the little mountain village of Sperryville there lived a little girl who loved to play by the river. She would awake early every morning just to hear the birds sing and to see the trees and grasses on the mountain come to life right before her very own eyes. She lived in a small house on a tiny little farm, tucked away in the old hollow. Her house had a footpath that led to the gravel road, which she walked each day on her way to and from the old schoolhouse.

She awoke sleepily one October morning only to find out she was late for school. The little girl had many morning chores to do so she was always very good about waking up early to feed her animals and retrieve a bucket of water from the well. But for some reason, this cool fall morning she had overslept.

So she jumped out of bed, put on her school dress and boots, gathered her books, and hurried off to school.

As she skipped down the gravel road, the little girl began to notice that something seemed different about the old hollow that morning. There were no birds singing, the trees were not blowing in
