shades. Enormous dirigibles. Navy blimps, cruised the sky patrolling for German submarines off the Atlantic coast. Sometimes we could hear the sound of “Taps” drifting across the water from the nearby Naval Hospital.
Those memories, and the blessing of growing up in Virginia, forged in me a love of history and of America that stirs in me daily . America was united then, with a sense of purpose and solidarity that came from a very real struggle for the survival of the planet, for the future of freedom. 1 think that we all felt that sense of national purpose and unity again on September 11, 2001. On that day I think everyone asked themselves, “How can I help?”
