A few of the goblins and witches around the town of Washington got together on Halloween and surprised a fellow goblin, Forrest Freeman, on his birthday with cake and witches brew. A real surprise, it was.
The witches and goblins gobbling cake included Mrs. Rosie Freeman, Mrs. Bertha Freeman, Mrs. Margaret Poles, Mrs. Lillian Aylor, Miss Angela Grigsby, Mrs. Darlene Russell, Mrs. Rachel Aylor, Mrs. Bessie Grigsby, James Johnson, Mrs. Nancy Freeman and Marsha Freeman.
In a photo, on behalf of the Washington Fire Department, Rev. Jennings Hobson accepts a $500 matching grant from the Virginia Division of Forestry, represented by Rappahannock Fire Warden Tippy Jenkins. The grant is part of a three year federal pilot program designed to help rural fire departments. All six Rappahannock companies were awarded funds this year.

Rappahannock voters overwhelmingly supported the referendum to change the method of selecting School Board members to direct election by the voters. The referendum passed with nearly 84 percent of the vote.
The 4-H Teen Club met on Monday, Nov. 2. Officers elected for 1992-93 are President Kelly Lawler, Vice- President Holly Gangel, Secretary Marie Andreoni, and Reporter Jim Clarke. Adult leaders are Kenner and Kim Love.
