“He doesn’t want this river here because it causes him nothing but grief. It makes noise all night long and keeps him awake while he tries to sleep” said another old man.

“And... when it rains, the river turns to mud and makes a mess of the road when I come to visit, “complained the third old man.

The little girl did not know what to say to the old men, but she knew she must tell them how much she loved the river. She was going to tell them how the river brought water to the houses in the hollow, and how the water helped the trees and grass grow. And she was going to tell them how the children loved to frolic in the river on their way home from school each day.
