The continuation of the Washington Town Council’s October meeting on Oct. 23 ended without a consensus on a replacement for the Council seat vacated by Steve Critzer. Because it was unable to reach a consensus, the Council must now look to the courts to make the selection for them.
The Town had forty-five days from the date of vacancy of the seat to make a selection, and it failed to do so. Town Attorney John Bennett will now petition the Circuit Court to select a councilperson, and the Court will do so when and how it sees fit. It may select either of the Council nominees—Barbara Stockton or Eugene Leggett—or it may opt to choose another individual. The Court can solicit information and comment from Tbwn residents before making its selection, or it can pick a new Councilperson without input from townspeople.

The Oct. 23 meeting of the Town Council was held solely to continue discussion and to attempt to reach a conclusion on a choice to fill the vacant Council seat. Mayor Stew Willis opened the discussion by asking if anyone had changed his opinion, and Councilman Reinhardt Lynch responded by saying that the question was unfair, and he suggested that nominations again be made.
