When I hit puberty and discovered that boys could be more than my frog-catching companions, my love of nature slipped in priority in life and my hygiene definitely improved. As I moved from budding naturalist to budding journalist in college, the joy of having creek muck in my ears and pine pitch on my pants became even more remote.
However, my fascination with all species, wild and domestic, never truly died. When I left college, I headed for rural settings as soon as I could — first in Virginia and then in the Rocky Mountain West. After working on a newspaper in Montana, I decided to learn about ranching first-hand and went to work on a cattle ranch at the base of the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming.
