RAAC will showcase an Iranian film, “The Day I Became a Woman” at The Theatre at Washington on Friday, Nov. 1 at 8 p.m.
This film was directed by an Iranian woman, Marzieh Meshkini, and produced and written by her husband, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, whose own film, “Gabbeh” was shown here in 1998. Despite the title, this picture has no objectionable content but it is intended for mature viewers.
We see how healthy and alive the Iranian cinema is, even in a society we think of as closed. In fact, Iranian women have a good deal more personal freedom than the women of many other Islamic countries; the most dramatic contrast is with Afghanistan.
