nut as soon as she opened her little mouth to speak, the old men started up their tools, and frightened off the little girl. As she ran down the gravel road, the little girl knew that the old men stopping the river must be the reason the old hollow was so different that morning.
When she got to school, she asked the other children if the wind was blowing the trees at their houses. And it was not. She asked them if the river was babbling down the brooks by their houses. And it was not. So she told the children not to worry, that on her way home from school that day, she would stop by the house of the old gray woman who lived in the hollow. Most people were afraid of the old gray woman, but the little girl knew that this woman was wise, and she would be able to help the little girl and all the children of the mountain.
