Hearthstone School
Wendy Sirat and Pine Phillips, Hearthstone’s gardening teachers, enjoyed helping Hearthstone students prepare for the coming of spring last week. The soil in the garden beds of each class were enriched with compost, the straw used for mulch lays over the mounds to protect emerging seedlings from any remnants of winter, and the anticipation in the children grows as they wait to see what comes up.
The discovery of a multitude of frog eggs in the wetland area and hearing the song of the peepers turned their attentions to reciting spring verses and singing their songs of springtime in the lower school. Ms. Sirat and Mr. Phillips also shared an opportunity to enjoy welcoming in spring with drumming circles. Each class had an hour of fun using one of their 50 varieties of percussion instruments from around the world. Following a basic rhythm, students were allowed to improvise and discover a sound that could blend in with the beat. Skillfully directed by the instructors, there was joy on everyone’s face as each individual contribution added to the full sound that was created. On March 19 they opened their doors to community members of all ages to participate in an evening drumming circle.
