In myth, the phoenix is a bird that consumes itself in fire every 500 years and rises renewed from its ashes. In everyday reality, life is an endless series of cycles: light and dark, growth and decay, joy and sorrow, birth and death and rebirth.
Just when winter seems to be lasting forever the long nights give way to lengthening daylight. Suddenly, up from the thawing soil spring tender green shoots. Birds that have been absent for months return to make nests and rear their young.
The warming air brings wonderful scents that stir memories of a year ago.
These are just a few of the reminders that creation is an ongoing process of transition. Every ending brings a new beginning, and so on, endlessly.
For centuries artists have been depicting the process of rebirth in countless ways.
Indeed, the Renaissance itself was literally a rejuvenation of human thought. In this spirit, and just in time for spring, the Packing Shed Gallery presents The Resurrection Show.
