The Thursday before Easter, or Holy Thursday, is observed in commemoration of the Last Supper of Jesus Christ.^-This day is also often referred to as Maundy Thursday.
In researching the origins of this name, I found that some believe the word Maundy comes from a corruption of the Old English word for commandment, which was originally spelled commaundment.
The word was shortened to Maundy through careless enunciation. Other scholars believe the word is from the Latin ihandatum which also means commandment.
Regardless of the origins of the word, the commandment that Maundy Thursday refers to is the one given by Christ in John 13:34— “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
