Next Step: the Rappahannock College and Career Access Program was established in 2005 as a partnership between Headwaters and Rappahannock County Public Schools with the help of a grant from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. Working with RCPS faculty and staff, guidance professionals, and community members, the program makes sure all students have the resources they need to create and carry out the college, vocational, or career plan that’s right for them—to “turn their dreams into plans.”
This month, Lauren Kelley Ross, a 2006 UVA Franklin Scholar, joined the Next Step staff as the new College Guide. “We are thrilled to have her on board,” said Advisor Miranda Hope. Lauren began meeting with students and families the week of August 14th.
Also this month, a new Next Step website went live! www.RappahannockDreams.co m is packed with information on how to plan, apply for, and afford college or trade school. It offers SAT help, dozens of links to colleges and trade schools, and links or information on over a hundred scholarships, including over 30 local and regional scholarships. The site was designed by Lynn Gasch, who donated her services, for which Headwaters and the Next Step staff and board are very grateful.
A number of new scholarships for local youth were established in 2006. These included the “Dream Award” fund, created by Next Step with the assistance of generous local donors, and the Elizabeth Biggs Scholarship Fund, established by the Biggs family, which will be administered by Next Step.
