One of four Rosenwald Schools built in Rappahannock County, Scrabble educated African-American children in the area from “primer,” or kindergarten, through seventh grade in its two rooms. Rosenwald Schools have been declared among America’s most endangered historic places, according to the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
In preparation for a weekend “history harvest” of oral interviews, Dr. French and a team of graduate students descended on the offices of the Rappahannock News early in August, reading through newspapers from the years 1959 until 1968 to gather images of all Scrabble School-related stories.
