Duiiaing earned logs into the saw. The latter was of the updown (as opposed to circular) type driven off a dedicated water wheel. At some time after initial construction, the power source was switched, via a series of long wooden shafts, to the larger wheel of the gristmill - movin’ on up to bigger timber perhaps.
In another structure a cider press cranked out the juice. The press was factory made suggesting that it was added at a much latter date than the machinery for the two mills. Power from the gristmill’s wheel was also adapted to operate this press. Though not included in the NPS survey of the 1940s, other information suggests that a distillery was also not too far off. Cider, even the hard variety, did not satisfy all the liquid needs in those days. In the same building as the press was a blacksmith shop.
