Sunday newspaper ads and a deluge of retail catalogs offer upholstered furniture that looks quite enticing. The professional photography in the ads show well proportioned, attractive looking room settings that can lead you to an impulsive purchase. But “Buyer Beware!” That’s not all there is to it.
Let’s take a piece of upholstered furniture completely apart. We start with the frame which is normally built out of lumber. Just the treatment of the wood used to build the frame can determine the quality. The best sofas and chair manufacturers use kiln dried hardwood products to insure durability. Corners should be blocked at the frame joints for strength and the construction of the frame is best when double doweled. Imagine what can happen when the frame of a sofa bows or bends over time. That would not be good! So, the construction of a well made frame is integral to the longevity of a piece of upholstered furniture.
Continuing with the internal parts of the sofa, engineered coils are placed deeply within the seat platform helping the upholstered piece of furniture give and take as you are seated. “Eight way hand tied” is an industry expression that means the support system is substantial, evenly placed, and of a quality that will make you feel as if you belong to the seat. The coils are actually tied together in different directions, so that they are balanced for support.
