The Rappahannock County High School football team tested their skills for the upcoming Fall 2006 football season as they played a high school benefit game at Colonial Beach last Friday. “It was a shootout,” said head coach Kemp Pullen about the Panthers’ loss in the 56-35 game.
In spite of the loss, Pullen said that he was very pleased with the performance of the team, particularly the offense.
“The fact that we scored 35 points is impressive,” he said. Pullen specifically mentioned seniors Bobby Czekaj and Jonathan Butler, as key to the strong offense this year. “Bobby has exceptional speed,” Pullen said, “They remembered who he was from last year.”
“ John Butler certainly performed better during the scrimmage and benefit game than he did in practice,” Pullen added dryly.
Coach Pullen also noted that both of the teams had light defense in the high scoring benefit game.
However, the coach seemed determined to work the Panther’s defense hard in preparation for their first game against the Luray Bulldogs. Pullen said that Luray is known to have a lot of physical size. “They play a power game,” he said, “I know that they have three or four big running backs.” In order to stop them, Pullen hopes to pull together the defense. “The staff and I have been working on their techniques,” said Pullen, “Our tackling hasn’t
