Outof-town visitors interviewed included Estelle Lewis’s sisters Mary Ella Jackson Wise of Washington, D.C., and Jacqueline Jackson Wider of Washington, D.G., sisters Katy Dennis Taylor of Suffolk and Olive Dennis Graves of Maryland, Bertha C. Nickens of Harrisburg, PA, and a group who attended the school during its last year of operation: John Haney Jackson, Melanie Thornhill Kopjanski, and Niles A. Aylor. Many spoke of thenfond memories of the school and its teachers, who worked with great perseverance to ensure that all children learned. Many alumni, some now with college degrees or graduate degrees, attributed their success to the community atmosphere where home, school, and church life were closely intertwined to provide a strict but protective and encouraging environment for children.
