His first novel, “Punjab Nights,” draws on Burns’ experience in Lahore, Pakistan in the late 60s. As the subtitle indicates it is a story of “Work, Love and Vengeance in the Land of Five Rivers,” the latter being the English translation of the Urdu word, Punjab. Bums’ knowledge of the history and politics of the region and his feel for the culture provide the context for a story of complex relationships.
Burns first dipped his toe into the tidal pull of fiction in Addis Ababa during the collapse of the Ethiopian monarchy. Having been confined to his home for many days during the violence and period of martial law that surrounded those events, he passed his time on the beginnings of a novel set in postindependence Malaysia.
