Some 300 feet east of the Atkins Inn and on the south side of the Thornton Gap turnpike was a mill complex. A three-story gristmill dominated this group of structures, with a 25 by 40 footprint. In a somewhat unusual arrangement, the grindstones for tire mill were located in its attic as was storage for the processed grain. This architecture may have related to site considerations as an elevated millrace carried water to the sixteen foot overshot millwheel. A crane was used to lift the millstones into place.
