Estimated $40,000 Damage Done by High Water Although Hurricane Diane’s winds did little damage to the county last week, the rains that accompanied her and followed in her wake, coupled with those that Hurricane Connie brought, poured into the county rivers, until they surged over the banks into fields and roads making new channels at will. The powerful waters ate great chunks from the roads, at places stripping them down to bed rock. The damage to county roads was roughly estimated at $40,000 or $50,000. State road force men worked from “can” to “can’t” making it possible for the stranded families to get out, but even then were not able to make them “open” for travel.
