wnen the ISew Market — Sperryville Turnpike was constructed shortly after the Revolutionary War, it is doubtful that W. Russel Barbee and Enos McKay thought too much about its appeal to bikers. give or take a few generations, and the horse was the open-air thrill ride of the day. Barbee and McKay had formed a partnership to construct the macadamized road including the formidable task of traversing the Blue Ridge. Just getting a ‘modem’ road up and down the mountain and through Thornton Gap was sufficient challenge. No thoughts of wind brushing the face while riding a hog around .an amusement park layout of sharp curves and switchbacks ydth the throttle near the max. Those would all come much later.
Breathtaking, best ride ever, the Thornton Gap run, white knuckles, thrills, and on and on; modem biker magazines and websites are replete with such wide-eyed descriptions of the seven or eight miles of US 211 that carry the modem ‘turnpike’ through Shenandoah National Park. (Given the ever-increasing number of serious or fatal bike accidents on the stretch, it might be prudent to add danger to the descriptions.) Alas, with such enticements, there is just' not much time to stop
