An upbeat and swinging evening of instrumental and vocal music from the American popular songbook. Ned Boynton is from the West Coast and “a wonderful guitarist,” San Francisco Chronicle. Karen Gray now lives near Annapolis and is “a tiptop vocalist,” Washingtonian Magazine.

Schubert’s “Die Winterreise”
John Elwes, tenor, and Kenneth Slowik, fortepiano, bring Schubert’s moving and exquisitely beautiful song cycle to the Theatre to open this 16th season of the Smithsonian at Little Washington. English tenor John Elwes leads a busy concert and operatic life, mostly in Europe, performing with conductors such as Nikolaus Haroncourt and Christopher Hogwood. He sang the role of Isaac in the world premiere recording of Benjamin Britten’s canticle Abraham and Isaac. (Britten dedicated his Corpus Christi Carol to Elwes.) He made his debut as a tenor in 1968 at the London Proms. He has participated in more than 100 recordings. Kenneth Slowik, artistic director of the Smithsonian Chamber Music Society, is a founder of the Smithsonian at Little Washington concert series. He is , one of the Theatre’s most appreciated musicians, having played here at virtually every season over the last fifteen years.
